assclowns, indeed.
Disagreeing with her politics is one thing. But she's an extremely intelligent, articulate, dignified, classy woman. (IMO, much more so than Melania Trump. But don't get me started.) This is racism, pure and simple, and it's damn ugly.
I have no fucking time for this shit. And it boggles me that they cannot see that this sort of thing, as you say, justifies the fears many have about a Trump presidency -- even though Trump is not saying it, many fear his presidency creates an atmosphere for ugliness like this to flourish.

Horrible! Yup, Cass is correct. It's the same argument about Bannon - he might not be an actual white supremacist, but he's allowed awful stuff to be published under his tenure at Breitbart. Republicans must be more vocal to denounce this sort of rhetoric. Even over-the-top more vocal. There are wounds to heal and fears to calm.

To get on my soapbox, this is the kind of thing all of us, of whatever political slant, need to join in condemning. Ditto with the punching and cursing of Trump voters.
We will always disagree on issues and policies. But we should come together on condemning ugliness and idiocy (and anywhere we can agree and compromise).
Enough already. I'm profoundly tired of the hunkered-down armed camps throwing rocks at each other.

This aspect of the Twitter culture boggles my mind. People broadcast crap like this in full public view, and then they're somehow wrongfooted when someone calls them on it.

It's really fun when someone gets all ragey and "stay out of my business!" when someone calls them on their crappy behavior. Like, maybe don't put it on the internet if you don't want people putting in their two cents?

These are the reasons I don't have either of those.

I used to be on facebook. Had 200 something "friends." But:
(1) they all kept bickering with each other on my damn wall. My fault, I guess, for having a diverse slate of acquaintances.
(b) My college stalker found me. Again. *shudder* (He never threatened me. But he managed to find my address in different four cities since college, and sends me creepy love letters, although he never ever gets an answer. Sure, I can block him on facebook, but still...)
(iii) parents? I like your babies. Really, I do. But I have zero interest in their poopy diapers. None. Stop. Especially the photographs.
ETA:
(IV) and yeah, I did have to unfriend a few people -- mostly elementary school classmates and such -- for making hideously racist/otherwise offensive comments. Really, it is astounding what some people think and will say on the internet.

Here's my take: they're not assclowns. They're racists. Cass mentioned this as well, but I think a distinction needs to be clearly made. These aren't just ignorant people. Yeah, they were stupid enough to post their vile opinions on Facebook and get busted, but the underlying problem is that they actually look at a black first lady and find ways to express how much they despise her in purely racist terms. They are representative of a narrative that needs to DIE, because it is feeding systemic racism. Also, in response to this racism, we don't need to mention how wonderful Michele Obama is (she is, but that's not the point). We don't need to mention how much less we regard the incoming first lady (I do regard her less, but that's not the point). The point is that this is racism, plain and simple. It needs to be called that, and not ass-clownery, or unfounded because of how great our first lady is. We need to shine a spotlight on how this is common talk in many circles, and though these "assclowns" got busted for it, the issue is that it happens in the first place. And to end my rant: this is not okay. This is NOT okay. THIS IS NOT OKAY. We need to fight this. (As Cass said.)

Well said, Christine. But to give rob credit, he did call them racists in the thread title. I think they're both, and perhaps he sought not to repeat himself.

Please do not encourage robo, Don.
I agree we don't need to focus on Michelle Obama's merits to find this offensive and racist, Christine. But given her merits, it makes it all the clearer that the remark IS racist, and just how racist it is, IMO. Love or hate her political stances, whether or not you think she's "beautiful" (I think she is, but whatever), if you can't see she's "dignified" and "classy," as these assclown apparently cannot, you are blinded by racism.

Yes, he did, I do believe rob is calling them racists. However, the thread title, "Justifying fears of racist bogeymen"... I don't know, I feel like there's something there, like, oh look, these assclowns are giving justification to the whole notion of racist bogeymen. They're not bogeymen, they're actual people. Huge swaths of people, unfortunately. I respectfully disagree. She doesn't need to have any merits or be dignified or classy or beautiful as further evidence of racism. This is a problem, that we find it more clearly racist, see it as more evident, because of the person. I don't care who the person is. This is unacceptable. Period. If it was a crack addict or a prostitute, would we denounce it less? I think we would not, should not. Therefore, I think the ancillary commentary regarding the first lady's attributes is misplaced. Even though I totally agree that she is an incredible, outstanding person.

I agree, in fact -- the "ape in heels" comment absolutely is unacceptable and outrageous regardless.
But remarking on her lack of dignity and class (as they do)? She obviously has both attributes. Their failure to see it is due to their racism.
But I think it IS possible to say someone lacks dignity and class without it being racist. For example, IMO, Trump has neither dignity not class. Has squat to do with being a white orange male. It has to do with his behavior.
