Most people would, I think, agree that bah behavior should have consequences, that people, groups, or orgs should be held accountable when they cross line, act badly, lie, cheat, or steal. Yet, people don't seem to really care all that much, unless such things impact them directly.
For instance, right now I'm in the VW dealership, getting a tire replaced (I had a blow out yesterday). I like my VW. I'm happy with it. When the lease is up, I'll likely get another VW. Yet, VW has engaged is some pretty bad behavior recently. They offered apologies, claimed it was accidental, and so forth, but come one who are they kidding? It was a fraud perpetuated on consumers. A big fraud. Yet here I am, happily doing business with VW, prepared to do more into the future. And I'm not alone:
Yet, there are more accusations being leveled against VW and other car makers:
Let's allow that these allegations are true, that these car makers are forced to pay some sort of penalty. Will it matter? Will people say "gee, maybe I should stop doing business with these companies, maybe I shouldn't buy their stock"? Probably not.
But should it matter? Some people are big on boycotts and the like in the moment for specific causes, but that never seems to translate to the bigger picture.
Thoughts?

Volkswagen’s profits more than doubled in the second quarter of the year, helped by a boost in sales across Europe, inspiring the carmaker to raise its 2017 sales forecast.
Yet, there are more accusations being leveled against VW and other car makers:
EU and German anti-trust regulators are looking at allegations that BMW, Daimler and VW, including its subsidiaries Audi and Porsche, collaborated for decades on many aspects of development and production, disadvantaging customers and suppliers.
