money.cnn.com/2017/07/27/technology/business/twitter-earnings/index.htmlMy youngest has no interest in twitter. My older two use it occasionally, but use other platforms like Instagram and Snapchat far more often. But all three have large group chats on their cell phones through the "message" function. Frankly, this is where they spend their "social media time," more often than not.

Twitter is good for 1 liners, and people pontificating, but it lacks depth and doesn't have the fun stuff and pictures of Instagram and Snapchat. You can't say as much on those 2 as you can on Twitter, but for those who don't have much to say, it's perfect. I annoy my kids with snap chat pics.
Facebook is better IMHO for having something closer to an actual conversation. I've connected with friends I haven't seen in years. Hell, family as well through Facebook. I'll tell a story. Skip ahead if you wish.
When I was 11 or 12, my father got into a huge fight with his Mom, sisters and uncles. We were banned from contact with them. None lived all that close, and there was no social media. The idea of even mentioning their name was forbidden to ask for a phone #, so I grew up without all my cousins, aunts, etc. About 2 years ago, someone on FB, another author, mentioned winning some contest, but they didn't see the notation until they checked their spam folder on FB. I didn't even realize we had one. So I checked mine. A cousin of mine had found me and asked if I was so and so. I was.
Withing 24 hours, I had aunts, uncles and cousins crawling out of the woodwork. I felt like a kid who's face had been on the back of a milk carton that never knew he was abducted. I've really connected with my aunts, who I adore. I learned so much from them. It angers me that I grew up without them, as life was rough with my dad. I wish I had someone who would have understood. I even dedicated my upcoming book to my aunts.
Anyway, point is, social media has it's place.

Alisyn Camerota has had enough: www.cnn.com/2017/07/11/opinions/dear-twitter-were-done-camerota-opinion/index.htmlDear Twitter (attn: trolls), She's a little wrong on the last. Plenty of people on twitter have no problem insulting others and not being anonymous. Witness Trump and many of his critics (who have verified accounts). Regardless, I don't think she's alone in her feelings in this regard, but I also don't think there's been change per se on twitter. It's just a numbers thing.

I keep trying, but I don't think Twitter's for me. It's a broadcast tool, not a share-with-friends tool. I'm not looking to build a brand or a market, so it's mostly noise to me.
I'm regularly baffled by how willing people are to broadcast ill-considered hot takes to the entire world. I assume it's in the hope that somehow the world will identify a genius they didn't know was there.
Kind of like the prevailing approach to poetry: just say some crap, and hope that someone with cred or chops reads something into it.

I've found my favorite uses of Twitter are (1) to follow news and (2) to make and read snarky remarks about it (the best snark is 140 characters or less). If you follow the right, reputable sources, and don't overload yourself with too many, you can get a neat snippet about the most important issues and those you care most about. Also, you can get instant takes on events as they are happening. I'm following a number of political reporters -- they were AMAZING during the Trumpcare debate and the night it was shot down. Sure, I was watching the Senate floor, but some of the journalists saw things I missed, or overhead things I couldn't, or could provide some context I wouldn't otherwise know. As a result, I was CERTAIN Johnny Mac wasn't going to do me wrong, long before his famous thumbs down. I stayed up to be sure, of course -- and for the show. . The key, of course, is finding the reliable ones. There are a ton of shitty rumor mongers flinging unreliable stuff around. But the good ones are just tremendous.

Another thing Twitter is good for, if you follow the right folks:. Pictures for my adorable file, like this one from Bernice King: (Yes, I am an unabashed sucker for pictures of great leaders with little kids. Also, I am loving the church clothes. Can't say why, since I'm utterly unreligious, but it moves me to see people get all decked out in their best for church. Also, I really love a little girl in buckled shoes and pigtails. So. Cute. And anything involving daughters and dads. So this gets to me in all kinds of ways.) Is it just me, or does little Bernice almost break the fourth wall in this photo, and look, not just at the photographer, but at us?
