I think RT is right, but I'd like for him to be wrong.
I'd like to see government actually work well. If that happened on the Republican's watch or the Democrat's, I'd be equally happy.
Do I expect it? Hell, no. But it's what I'd wish for.

Government does actually work well, sometimes, no wish-granting required.
But more importantly, who are you and what have you done with Don?

What I said was in no way inconsistent with other positions I've expressed. I wish Santa was really coming Christmas eve, too.

I believe there won't be any change come the 19th. I also believe the recount is a waste of time and money. I also give the republicans 6 months before they screw something up big time. If the democrats have been paying attention I think they stand a good chance of taking back congress in two years. The House is a possibility I think, though it's going to be difficult because of the Repub's control of State legislatures. The Senate, while it seems close enough for it to happen, may actually be the harder task. In 2018, there will only be 8 contested Repub Senate: Wyoming, Nebraska, Mississippi, Texas (Ted Cruz), Arizona (Jeff Flake), and Utah (Orin Hatch), Tennessee, and Utah. In contrast, there will be 23 contested Dem seats. That's a tough ask.

The electoral college meets today right? yep. and if they do anything other than elect Trump, I would be utterly astonished. That's not to say I'm particularly happy about that

Well, I'm not happy that Trump is going to be POTUS, but I wasn't happy when he secured the nomination and therefore as far as I was concerned handed it to Clinton. So I've gotten used to being not happy for the next 4 years.
Having said that, if the electoral college didn't give it to Trump and installed Hillary now, I'd be pretty pissed. Not because they robbed it from Trump, but because it would bring untold damage to our system.

I am seriously wondering -- if the consensus is that it is so very wrong for an elector to be "faithless," why don't we just assign points to states and skip the electors and electoral voting?
ETA:
And yes, I know all the reasons the founders put an electoral college in place, so you need not enumerate them for me.
The founders assumed the electors would be independent actors, not just rubber stamps. We now very much expect them to be rubber stamps. That being the case, I don't see much point in having them be actual people (and I rather think we should consider just have the popular vote decide it).
