So the idea is you can't sneak a gun in. In response to a shooting where no gun was snuck in, he walked in with it.
Also, you can hide a small gun inside a pencil bag or between folders. Some of the pictures we've seen have kids putting a bunch of pics in them as a big FU. So why can't a gun be hidden.
This is something to make it look like someone is doing something when I can't imagine this is going to really stop a single school shooting.
On the other hand, it might embarrass a kid if someone sees they have tampons or a brochure on how to come out to your parents in there.
Other than that, brilliant.

Next thing you know, they'll be demanding clear windows, too.

I see it as a real teachable moment, actually. OTOH, a lot of people want to ignore the wider implications. Bolding mine, natch.

I voted that the people behind it have good intentions (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt) but that it's a bad idea. It seems to be a well-meaning response with little critical thought behind it.
Why not have metal detectors and/or bag checks instead (like at many other schools). Clear backpacks will solve nothing and will only invade privacy.
It's security theater and little more.

I see it as a real teachable moment, actually. OTOH, a lot of people want to ignore the wider implications. Bolding mine, natch. Are you alluding to proposed new gun laws, and equating those proposals with "clear backpack" rules? If so, you seriously need to think harder, and also maybe not use a whining teenager to make your point. As to the OP, I don't think this a solution, at all. If the problem were kids sneaking guns* into school, it's a possible deterrent. But that's not the problem they're attempting to address, as far as I can tell. *Several years ago, there was some sort of "contraband" problem in our area, and they implemented a clear backpack policy. It didn't last long, no idea why. Perhaps in general, clear backpacks would make it harder to hide contraband. My guess is that kids would find other ways, so it's probably pointless. Still, I don't see the big deal with clear backpacks. I don't think they help, but I don't see it as an invasion of privacy, either. I saw the twitter bit with clear backpack full of tampons. That seemed really silly to me. Tampons could go in a purse, or they could be put into a separate small pack inside the clear backpack. So that whole OMG my private girl things seemed a bit over the top. It's a bookbag. Books go in it.

It's pointless. Me, I'd put all my stuff in an opaque bag and put that bag inside the clear bag.
There are better things to spend money on.
And it gives a false impression something useful is being done--which it isn't--which in turn may give them excuses not to do something that actually would be useful.
