I'm not making claims as to what can or cannot happen. Not my area of expertise. I'm merely conjecturing about what I think Trump's goal is.
I don't think Trump is really scared of the House subpoenaing his tax returns. I mean, yanno, no one can understand them anyway.

I think Trump's goal is to shut it down entirely. I just don't think he can, or that if he does, it won't explode in his face. It's just amazing he's trying to pull it off, and his timing. He sure does act guilty for an innocent person.
Another question is "why today?" Right after a new House is voted in that will surely do their best to hold him accountable? I mean, doesn't that just reek?
Apparently Sessions wanted to stay until the end of the week, but...

I agree that Trump's business dealings are relevant to collusion with Russia during the elections, but also to possible continued... oh, let's call it treason, shall we? If, as may be possible, Russia has been laundering money through the Trump empire, that would be a federal crime within the purview of the original mandate and, even if it weren't, should probably be looked into, don't you think?

To be clear: I don't think this is 80 dimensional chess on Trump's part. I think this is desperate, unhinged thrashing. But because he's president, his desperate, unhinged thrashing can do a shitload of damage.
Trump's big problem is that Mueller is in fact playing 80 dimensional chess.
By the way? A lot of rumors that Don Jr. is going to be indicted very soon. I am betting they are true.

I don't think Trump is playing an advanced strategy, but he does possess a certain reptilian-like cunning. That's why I believe he would love to blow up the investigation but instinctively knows if he does it won't end good for him.

He does possess a certain reptilian-like cunning, but it is for things within his ken. He's good at sussing out what will appeal to a slavering crowd. He's good at distracting people. He's good at infuriating people in order to distract them or get them to act in a certain way. He's good at bluffing stupid people.
What he's not good at is understanding our legal system and our system of government. I don't think he understands, at all, the limitations it puts on him. I don't think he's good at acknowledging that anyone is smarter than he is, or has power or knowledge he doesn't. Those things are not within his ken.
He's very ill-equipped to deal with someone like Mueller.
ETA:
He also hates to be told he can't do things. He hates to be told he's wrong or making a bad choice. That thing he did with Comey? He was told what a shitty idea it was, and he did it anyway, and it's a large part of why he's in the place he's in.
That wasn't reptilian cunning.

This is a great point. Will he be able to resist that reptilian urge to blow it up? From his perspective, should he? Let's face it, he's kinda screwed either way. His determination to end, or limit, the investigation is (imo) indicative that Mueller will find, or has found, something incriminating, some crime he's committed. So if Trump doesn't blow it up, he's buggered. But, as you suggest, if he does it won't end well, either.
Also, Cass, if you're right about Don Jr., then wow. That really would be (one hopes) the beginning of the end for papa.

Lots of reputable folks/sources discussing the Don Jr. rumor on Twitter. They aren't cranks. E.g.,
Will it happen? I dunno. But there is certainly a lot of discussion about it.

Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead.
I realize Session's departure had nothing to do with his cannabis insanity, but it's the best collateral damage I've seen in a long time.

Katyal and Conway team up again to condemn Trump's appointment of acting AG:

When Trump elected, Whiitaker is the kind of guy I was most terrified he'd appoint.
We'll be nostalgic for Sessions before this is through.

Just a coffee boy...
I predict Whitaker lasts about a Scaramucci.
I predict Kobach replaces him.

This is pathetic. Watch the clip (click on the tweet; it's in the article).
Whatever Trump has on Graham, it must be good. Unless it's just raw ambition on Graham's part, in which case I have bad news for him -- Trump's gonna pick Kobach over him for AG.
