Seriously, there remains a very substantial portion of people--mostly on the left and in academia, it is true--who have convinced themselves that mankind has "progressed," that we--as a whole--are more civilized and less prone to barbarism (they tend to make these arguments by virtually ignoring the Holocaust, Pol Pot, the Rape of Nanking, etc.; that, or the jump to "civilized occurred after 1979). We're the same. Events like this drive that point home, imo.

Yep.
Then, of course, I've seen people arguing the reverse -- lamenting these are the worst times ever in history.
And I don't buy that, either. Humanity pretty much sucks about the same as it has for lo these past many millennia. Now and then we have a few good people and good ideas that come in to yank things temporarily up a notch, and then the sheer weight of the ugly works to drag them down.
