Inspired by this post in the Megan an Harry thread, where Piers Morgan tries to insult David Simon by claiming The West Wing was way better than The Wire, what are your top five TV shows--the ones you think are the best, not necessarily the ones that you like the most--of all time?
Here's Rolling Stone's top 100 for reference (from 2016): www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-lists/100-greatest-tv-shows-of-all-time-105998/
My top five (I'm only doing scripted shows, no Carson, no Daily Show, etc.):
1) The Sopranos (honestly, I don't even think it's debatable, the show changed TV completely)
2) Cheers (remains eminently watchable)
3) Breaking Bad (my son's all time fav)
4) Seinfeld (again, just easy to watch)
5) The Simpsons
Six months from now, maybe the list is a little different, maybe 4) and 5) are different, but certainly not the top two. Those are locked down for me. And Breaking Bad won't be leaving the top five.
Having said that, I just finished season one of The Wire. And it may end up in the top five. It's certainly--imo--already way better than The West Wing. Sorkin's writing gets tired after a while. I don't like his TV shows, in general, after a couple of episodes (The Newsroom, in particular, collapsed in on itself from its own hubris after a couple of episodes).
I didn't include Firefly or NewsRadio in the top five because the first was just two short and the final season of the second was awful. The Larry Sanders Show is right there, however, as is MASH (even with its unfortunate final of couple of seasons). And Person of Interest, which is really growing on me, largely thanks to a great plot and a couple of awesome badass characters.
