...NOT Chadwick Boseman! I didn't watch the Academy Awards, first because I lost interest in Hollywood navel gazing in expensive gowns a decade ago, and second because I really hadn't seen any of the nominees for this year's awards. But, I did know that the late Chadwick Boseman was up for an Oscar. And given the totality of the events across the last year or so, I kinda figured he was a shoe-in. My son informed me that producers of the show actually changed the order of the awards, putting best actor last, in obvious anticipation of a yuge moment when Boseman won. But he didn't win. Anthony Hopkins--who was not present at the event--won. I even got a google news alert on my phone with the headline "Chadwick Boseman doesn't win best actor." In what amounts to a nothing year for film (I'm sure there will be asterisks a plenty in the history books), who in their right mind--especially among the uber-woke elite--wouldn't vote for Boseman? Seriously, how can it be? Who the hell are these voters, again? If nothing else, I now have yet another reason to despise the Academy Awards...,

Perhaps it went to the better performance this year? I saw several stories about how people were supposedly pissed (on Twitter, of course) about Boseman losing. I get that he was expected to win but it seems he was expected to win for a bunch of reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with his performance (e.g., he died, we're in the era of BLM and woke Hollywood forcing diversity, etc.). I even saw one story online lamenting how his loss was a "blow to diversity" given that so many other POCs had won other major awards, making it seem like he was "supposed" to win to complete the hat trick or something.
Big yawn from me, though, because I don't care about celebrity circle jerk awards shows. But it does warm the cockles of my cold, dark heart to know that it had some of the worst ratings in the show's history (as it seems all awards shows for the past 2 years have had). Hopefully this will send the message to celebrities that nobody really gives a shit about them anymore, but probably not.

I do think some of the whining is over the top. That said, Boseman's performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom already garnered him a Golden Globe, a SAG, and a ton of other awards for best actor, so it's not like there's any justification needed to select him. Again, in what is clearly an off year for film, I was just shocked that Boseman didn't win. But I'll be over it by lunch time...
Side note: when is the Academy going to get rid of the best actor/best actress awards and just present one for best performance? That's not very current...

I think Boseman is a very good actor. I like him in pretty much everything I've seen him in and I'm sure he was fantastic in his last role. I just meant that the vibe I was getting from the mouth-breathing bluechecksTM and other weirdos on Twitter was that they expected him to win / he "should have won" because of a laundry list of identity reasons rather than whether his performance was actually the best. For what it's worth, I'd heard some really good things about Hopkins' performance in his film too, but I didn't ever watch it because it just sounded like an incredibly depressing movie.
