I keep seeing notifications on Facebook that so-and-so was "live." I didn't know whether I was supposed to congratulate them for not being dead or if the notifications were actual death notifications (i.e. Don was live, meaning he's not anymore). But apparently I was all wrong. This is what Facebook Live is all about: www.cnn.com/2017/01/04/us/chicago-facebook-live-beating/index.htmlBeyond that, there's talk that a hate crime enhancement is being considered. I'm sorry, but these idiots kidnapped a guy, tied him up, beat him, and cut into him with a knife. Shouldn't there be more than enough there already?

For consistency, this thread should be named Rolling Jackwagons Go Live! And I propose that robeiae 's sentencing enhancement be referred to as the Jackwagon Clause.

How about we add another day to their sentence for every share and/or like it gets from when it's transmitted until conviction?
It might make them plead out really fast.

It is truly disheartening how many people seem to be horribly cruel, abominably stupid, or both. I mean, livestreaming a crime, how do you not know you're going to get caught and convicted?

But apparently I was all wrong. I think you're confusing "live" with "alive." It is truly disheartening how many people seem to be horribly cruel, abominably stupid, or both. Indeed, and well said. So, um, is that the point of this thread or is there something more to it? Inquiring minds and all.

I think you're confusing "live" with "alive." I think you're taking my attempt at a little humor--feeble though it may be--a little too seriously. This thread is about a video of a kidnapping/beating that went viral in a big way. There are multiple points of departure from there, including the relationship between social media and this kind of stuff--I added another similar story to that end--and the issue of whether or not this should be seen as a hate crime (which has lots of other angles, as well). There are other things, like the Trump angle (which I personally see as being overblown by some).

The people in the video are clearly anti trump. They're also clearly anti decent human, and so when they indulge in the latter, you can expect the former to come out.

So, specifics here, along with the following update (for the initial story): This the the hate crime statute in Illinois: www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/documents/072000050k12-7.1.htmAssuming first offense here, that would make it a class 4 felony, which is punishable by 1-3 years in prison, plus the additional consequences detailed above (restitution, fine, community service). I'm sorry, but if the victim had been someone else, had not been mentally challenged to some extent, had not been white, and the assailants had not said "f*** white people," but had done everything else, I can't see how that would have been any less reprehensible. Aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, plus burglary, those strike me as indicative of what transpired. I don't see the benefit of the hate crime enhancement at all (which is why I'm opposed to such things as a matter of course).

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-35989955Link provided for reference. It's not an entirely parallel report, but indicates this crime has non racial roots in some sense. Personally, I dont feel race, or trump were the motivating factors--shocking was. And how better to shock than throw your ace cards on top of an already wild spreading fire? It's disgusting, an absolute disgrace that this happened/happens--and once again, I put social media to the foreground as a publishing platform. All social media need to accept that monniker and moderate/vet content.

Want to add that bad people do bad shit... But we constantly decorate it with labels to explain it or excuse it--nowadays more so than ever. I dont give 2 flying fucks skin colour or religion, political persuasion, gender or sexual orientation. Don't do bad shit, you won't be a bad person.

Oh, Christ, I remember that story, Kie. Horrible.
I tend to think if you do something cruel and horrible to another human being on purpose, whatever your motivation is, you suck.

I think it's fine to have a stand against hate crime legislation as a whole. Imagine that someone you love was killed and it appeared to be because of racism. Then when the culprit is caught, you learn it was over money, and the race angle was something they used to throw police off the trail of their identity.
The victim is still dead and their friends and family is still devastated, no?
It's political. If you oppose hate crime laws, you must be okay with hate crimes.
Having said that, if you're going to have it, clearly this case falls under a hate crime.

Just by way of an update: wgntv.com/2017/12/09/woman-19-gets-probation-in-beating-of-disabled-teen-on-facebook-live/Four years probation, 200 hours community service, for a brutal kidnapping and beating--of someone with special needs--that was live-streamed on FB. Yeah, that makes sense... Don't know what the other three got, though.
