I'm flying out of that airport in exactly one week from today. It's a little close to home.
From what I'm hearing, the shooter is former National Guard, with a tour of Iraq. From New Jersey, raised in Puerto Rico. And there's a lot of talk about him having mental problems.

"We" have no way to prevent massacres, period. It's all security theater, intended to make people feel safe, while leaving massive holes that are easily exploited and totally failing to anticipate the NEXT method for producing a massacre.

Just fyi, the baggage claim area in Ft. Lauderdale airport--and at MIA--is not secure in the least, just as is the case for every other US airport that I have ever visited. The guy could have ubered to the baggage claim area from West Palm with his guns in tow, gone into the same bathroom, then come out blazing.
While this incident took place at an airport, I don't think airport security--with regard to air travel--matters here at all.

To the contrary, the issue of airport security as I described it above is paramount here. Your description of what happened is an excellent example of "massive holes that are easily exploited and totally failing to anticipate the NEXT method for producing a massacre" that I described.

Disagree. What happened here could just as easily have happened at a mall, at a restaurant, at a little league game, and so forth. Trying to anticipate the next method or location for this sort of massacre is a fool's errand, imo.

What happened here could just as easily have happened at a mall, at a restaurant, at a little league game, and so forth BECAUSE the TSA IGNORES the arrival half of an airport just as it does any other public venue that ISN'T transportation related. The TSA is not charged with protecting malls, restaurants or little league games. It IS charged with protecting transportation facilities. I think that should include arrival lounges and baggage claims. Silly of me, perhaps. That is a perfect description of "a massive hole that is easily exploited." Leaving that opening in place for the entirety of their existences is "totally failing to anticipate the NEXT method for producing a massacre."

I heard you the first time. And I still disagree. You want pat downs and vehicle searches just to drop someone off at the airport? Because that's what would have to happen. For starters.

I heard you the first time. And I still disagree. You want pat downs and vehicle searches just to drop someone off at the airport? Because that's what would have to happen. For starters. Nope, I don't want any of those things. I don't want any of the stupid things that make departing an airport on a flight a total hassle these days, either. My point is that if they're only going to protect half the building, it's useless. It's theatre. It's a waste of resources and a waste of taxpayer dollars. In short, it's "a massive hole that is easily exploited." I'm not arguing that it's a hole that can realistically be closed. The TSA cannot possibly close all the "massive holes that can be easily exploited." That's what makes it theater. And if they can't close that massive hole, then they are also "totally failing to anticipate the NEXT method for producing a massacre." Anybody who thinks the TSA is doing its purported job of securing transportation when it leaves huge gaping holes in the system, like, for example, HALF AN AIRPORT, they're seriously fooling themselves. I'm not sure why you're disagreeing with those two statements. The facts are in evidence, unless there's some way to make the point that protecting only HALF the airport isn't leaving "a massive hole that is easily exploited."

Airplanes are--as 9-11 demonstrated--potential weapons that can cause a lot more damage and kill a lot more people than can a pissed off person with a gun. And airplanes are also a means of transport that require some measure of security as a matter of course (can't have fugitives jumping on planes with no checks at all). So there's going to be a layer of security for people getting on and off planes above and beyond everything else. That is, I think, common sense. Doesn't mean the TSA is doing a great job, works the way it should work, or anything else. But the TSA isn't there to secure every possible facet of airport security. It's ridiculous--imo--to suppose that it is. It's there to check on who and what gets on and off flights.
There's no "massive whole that is easily exploited." You keep saying that but it's nonsense, imo. Again, what happened here could have happened in plenty of other places. So far, this is a guy of his nut who shot up a place. It happened to be a baggage claim area.

Like rob said - you are missing the point. The TSA's job is not to prevent a mass shooter from running amok in the airport itself. That is indeed something that can happen pretty much anywhere.
The TSA's job is to prevent airplanes from being hijacked and/or turned into weapons.
Whether or not they do a good job of that is, of course, debatable, but while there are lots of things to criticize about the TSA and their screening procedures, the fact that they can't prevent someone from walking into the airport with a gun isn't one of them.
