Agree all you like. As I said, criticizing the words is fine. I agree the statement could have been more sensitively stated. But reading "he hates transgender people and those words were intended to malign them" into those six words? No. Just no. Wait, what? I never took any of it to mean Amadan hates transgender people. To be honest, I feel like he "hates" Manning (for what she did), and the insensitive transgender remark was a reflection of that. ETA: A lot of people hate what she did. It's a valid perspective, imo. I don't know what to think about it, personally. No, you're right. You didn't. You criticized his words, which was completely fine. And you asked about his intent. Also fine. You get a cookie. But someone did read deliberate intent to malign transgender people into those words... Ditto. The intent to malign Manning for being transgendered was clear.

I took ohio's comment to mean exactly what was written: that Manning was being maligned for being transgendered. Not that all trangendered people were being maligned. God this is exhausting. Group hug.

We need more liberal folks on this forum, not fewer. In some other places, we need more conservative folks. I hate echo chambers. I want to hash this shit out, or read and think and learn when other people are hashing it out. Ergo, I am depressed.

I took ohio's comment to mean exactly what was written: that Manning was being maligned for being transgendered. Not that all trangendered people were being maligned. God this is exhausting. Group hug. *hugs Christine* How would one malign Manning for being transgendered without also saying that being transgendered is a bad thing? If you say "Rob is maligning Cass for being a woman", is that not saying that Rob thinks being a woman is somehow bad? I didn't see Amadan doing that. What I saw was Amadan maligning Manning for leaking secrets, saying he disagreed with the commutation of her sentence, and adding (as a seconday point) that Manning got more sympathy that she otherwise would have because she was transgender (a point he could have worded more sensitively, I agree). Note that I personally am on board with Manning's commutation and am in no way maligning Manning for being transgender. I am also on board with criticizing Amadan's word choice. We need more liberal folks on this forum, not fewer. In some other places, we need more conservative folks. I hate echo chambers. I want to hash this shit out, or read and think and learn when other people are hashing it out. Ergo, I am depressed. I welcome liberal views. But for the record, I don't see this board as lacking them. Most of us swing liberal on most or all social views. Most of us bash Congress and Trump. We have only one Trump voter on the site. I'd say this board is certainly left of where the country is overall -- we probably average out center left. And please note that no one has been repressed from or banned for expressing a liberal view (or a conservative view). Nor will they be.

I'd like a greater variety of views here as well. More voices are better, but I don't think most here are right at all, maybe left of center in some regards.

We have 27 people, not all of whom post regularly. Of course we could use more views.
But:
I definitely don't think we skew conservative overall compared with the country as a whole -- if anything,, the reverse.
I do not think we should soft-pedal arguments with people expressing some views, simply because that person happens to be in the minority on this board.
I don't believe in sacred cows and safe spaces in political discussions.
I do not think we should suppress views -- whether minority or majority -- unless those views are clearly trolling.

You know what we do have in disproportionate numbers, by the way? People who don't clearly align with one or another of the two major parties.

(To Cass's post above, wherein she quoted me)
1. I swore I'd say no more on Amadan's post, so I won't. It's healthy to let go, 5 out of 10 psychologists agree. =D
2. In general, people can be broadly accepting of various minority groups, but when they're pissed off, sometimes ugly stuff can come out, not necessarily because they're secret racists or anti-LGBT or whathaveyou, but because it's "easy" to ping individuals you hate with personal, unrelated insults. But yeah, other people in whatever "group" can also hear it and feel disparaged, or at least offended, so there's that.
3. Thank you for acknowledging/understanding my take on the words and the sensitivity and all, and thank you for the hug. *hugs back*
4. Now, let us go forth and conquer the evil extremes of the two political powers, as all left-of-center peeps must needs do.

Great. Alcohol and sharp pointy objects.
This won't end well. Unless haggis gets skewered.

That reminds me. Haggis has been avoiding me for some reason. You don't think he's holding a grudge about my trying to shish kabob him, do you?

No matter what reason, no haggis is always the best scenario.
