Meh. I think it's a tad disingenuous to call it a "campaign rally." Obviously, I think, his intent is to use this kind of event--where he is in full control--to fire back at his critics and the press. According to the Orlando Sentinel--which labels it just a "rally"-- tickets are free. I honestly don't remember the first time Obama or Bush did a rally like this when they were in office, but I do remember Obama's "Town Hall" in April of 2009. That was the same sort of event that this will likely be, no?

So Trump is just doing it on day 30 instead of day 100. Three times as fast! Speediest rally ever! Big League! To be fair, the Trump camp is calling it a campaign event. abcnews.go.com/Politics/president-trump-holding-campaign-event-florida-saturday/story?id=45521140Do we have any betting on whether he answers questions on Flynn, Russia, and the like, town hall style? It will be interesting to see. To tell you the truth, the story caught my attention less for the rally than for the jetting off to Florida every weekend. I know lots of high-powered executives. They do not make it to their winter residences every weekend, and it is not a matter of money, but time. When they do take a weekend, if they have a family, they spend it with them. Doesn't he have a kid living in the other direction? I saw Melania joined him in Florida once. Did she go again? Is Barron going? If they're just managing to keep the kid's movements on the down low, cool, but if not -- I don't know, this arrangement seems even more fucked up than I initially thought. Who goes a month without seeing their kid if they can possibly help it? I don't know. It all seems odd to me. ETA: Don't get me wrong. I'm delighted he's not clogging up the streets of NYC with motorcades and even more security, as threatened. But I do think it odd, just the same.

I don't think he'll answer any questions, unless they're ones that he has set up beforehand. And yeah, I think his ass needs to stay in DC for a bit and stop flying back and forth to Florida. There's plenty of room for criticism, for sure.
Nonetheless, calling this a "campaign rally" and implying that it's about the next election--which is what major news sites like NYT, CNN, and so forth are doing--is disingenuous, imo. Fine for an op-ed, but not for news coverage. But that distinction seems to have disappeared entirely since Trump took office (it was already pretty hazy) and that continues to disappoint me. This war with Trump isn't going to end well for anyone, imo.

Rob -- see above. I edited my post after doing a bit more reading. Apparently Spicer and the Trump administration itself are calling it a campaign rally, and advertising it on Trump's campaign website. The characterization is actually theirs. ETA: Here's the campaign website, taking donations already. (see above post -- that is NOT typical this early.) It was advertising the rally; it now announces the registration for it is closed. www.donaldjtrump.comThe characterization of it as a campaign rally is perfectly fair, I think. Although to be perfectly fair, I didn't realize how fair when I first started the thread. (Am reading and posting on my phone, which hampers mey efficiency somewhat.) ETA: Sean Spicer apparently also said the campaign would be paying for the rally. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-to-hold-campaign-style-rally-in-florida/Also worth noting that Trump criticized Obama for running what he termed a "permanent campaign." ETA: To be honest, I'm floored that Trump and Spicer are calling it a campaign rally and not, e.g., a town hall. And floored that he's already soliciting campaign contributions. Initially, I just thought it was a tad early for a town hall sort of thing, and cynically thinking he just wanted some cheers. But no, it's worse than that. I swear, I love playing devil's advocate and defending what others criticize (and vice versa) -- but Trump makes that pretty impossible for me.

I have to admit, I didn't realize the half of that when I started the thread.
Just when I think I'm mocking Trump and taking a bit of a cheap shot, it turns out the truth is worse than my joke.

Well... ... ... I hesitate to say this, but Trump is the end game of a trend in some respects. Presidents involve themselves in fundraising/campaign events far more frequently now than in the past. And Obama went much farther down this road than did his predecessors, I think (though Trump looks set to leap to the end of the road all at once). Trump represents a sort of end game in lots of other negative--imo--habits, as well. Though again, he's still far worse in this regard than what came before.

Given his current poll numbers, starting his 2020 campaign right now makes sense because it might take him that long to get his approval back over his disapproval ratings.

Perhaps he's hoping the leakers will go after his opponent and leave him alone. Everything was great as long as it was Clinton's and the DNC's emails leaking out...
Of course, he doesn't have an opponent yet in the 2020 campaign, but he can always prop up a Warren doll and pretend.

Trump apparently had a brain fart and forgot that he's already held campaign rallies and raised funds for 2020...
Quoth the Donald:
Seriously, what a tool.
