So, yesterday there was an FA Cup match between Arsenal FC and Sutton United.
The FA Cup is a season-long tournie in English football where basically every team in English football fights it out, from the "major league" of the EPL (Premier League) on down to non-league level teams (there are five league levels in English football, which are basically composed of professional, full time players and management).
This was a fifth round match-up. Arsenal is from the EPL, while Sutton is a non-league team. Most of the players on Sutton have full-time jobs outside of football. The manager isn't paid for his work. Their field--where this match was actually held--is like a high school or park field in the middle of a residential neighborhood, with metal bleachers, that allows about 5000 spectators (most don't have seats, usual crowds are around 1500).
It was a huge deal for Sutton to make the fifth round. It's something that just doesn't happen (another non-league team actually won their fifth round match this year). Arsenal won, predictably.
But something controversial occurred: the back-up Sutton keeper was caught on a TV camera stuffing his face with a pie. This was after Sutton had made its three subs; it was impossible for him--Wayne Shaw--to get into the game at this point. And frankly, he was never going in to begin with. Sutton is required to have a back-up keeper; Shaw is 45 year old *unfit* man (his nickname is the "roly poly goalie"), who is also the greens keeper for Sutton's field. Yet, he's now been forced to resign from his job.
Why?
Because apparently, one of England's bookies (SunBets) actually put out odds on Shaw getting caught on camera eating a pie. 8-1 odds. And some people cleaned up on that bet. Shaw was also apparently aware that SunBets has put out this prop before the game. So now the FA (Football Association) and Gambling Commission are investigating.
My two cents: Shaw is not very bright. But he's also not really doing anything wrong. There's no rule against him eating pie and he doesn't control the cameras nor does he decide which feed will be broadcast in a given moment.
And someone at SunBets is also an idiot and and asshole for putting out this prop, to begin with.
AND the FA/Gambling Commission need to find some better uses for their time. A prop like this that has zero to do with competition or the actual game should be ignored, not turned into a Big Deal. Shame on them.

And fyi, I was watching this live and the announcers were behaving poorly, as well.
