Guess what — there’s something even more vapid than Katy Perry’s pop music: Katy Perry’s protest music.
Sorry to be harsh. Perry’s a pop superstar, but as a lyricist she isn’t exactly Bob Dylan. (The bridge of one of her hits: “Boom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon / It’s always been inside of you, you, you / And now it’s time to let it through.”)
Now, however, she wants her music to matter. “We gonna call this era Purposeful Pop,” she tweeted Feb. 10, the day her newest single, “Chained to the Rhythm,” was released. Her rollout of this new would-be genre shows Perry doesn’t know the first thing about serious protest music.
