An odd story:
www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-birmingham-39266777
"Fell-running" is running up hills, apparently (never actually heard of it, myself). The apparent reason for the stabbing? Jeska wasn't selected to represent England for some sort of international competition. Why wasn't she selected (despite being a three-time English champ)? Because there was some dispute over what her blood samples indicated.
Frankly, the reports on this are not clear to me at all, but as near as I can tell, no one new she was transgender and when bloodwork revealed this, that she was born male, the possibility arose that she could be stripped of her past wins. I think.
Regardless, it was a pretty horrific attack, so I don't have much sympathy for her. Still, I guess it raises the issue--again--of transgender athletes and competition.
Personally, I don't have a problem-in general--with transgender athletes competing as however they identify. That said, I understand why there are worries about fairness in this regard. People can say "hey, it's just a game/sport, it shouldn't matter that much," yet as Ms. Jeska's actions prove, it really matters to some people.

A fell-running champion has been jailed for 18 years for stabbing three top athletics staff at a major UK stadium.
Lauren Jeska admitted trying to murder ex-Bristol rugby player Ralph Knibbs, who she attacked at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium last March.
Birmingham Crown Court heard that Jeska stabbed Mr Knibbs in the head and neck, leaving a 2cm hole with "blood pumping out".
It was like Jeska, 42, was "trying to skewer meat", the court was told.
