I can't believe no one started a thread on this yet...
Anyway, here's the scoop:
That seems like a rather nit-picky and petty reason to disqualify someone. Honestly, I'm having hard time understanding how this issue might have even been discovered. What, did someone go through every thing he used in his campaign with a fine toothed comb, then compare every item to a list of receipts? I mean, I'd understand it if there was a cap on spending and he bought air time on the campus radio station, or maybe paid for a concert..something notable and significant. But some glow sticks? Come on.
Anyway, this election is in the news because Rick Perry wrote an op-ed on it: www.khou.com/news/local/texas/perry-decries-election-of-1st-gay-texas-am-student-president/424846190
Many people are questioning why Perry would stick his nose in this, but three things:
1) He's an Aggie.
2) I think he knows the guy's family (the one disqualified).
3) Teh gay.
Seriously on the last: if it was a gay student who had been disqualified, Perry wouldn't have said jack, imo.
That said, there do appear to be some shenanigans going on here.
Here are the nitty gritty details (for those of us with no lives): www.thebatt.com/news/j-court-rules-to-uphold-mcintosh-s-expense-report-disqualification/article_5b290be0-051a-11e7-8e41-d30c97ab64c7.html
Now, the election commissioner--named in the above link--had also come down on McIntosh for supposedly engaging in voter intimidation. She had, in fact, disqualified him for this. But a hearing on that led to her decision being overturned: www.thebatt.com/news/j-court-rules-to-overturn-mcintosh-disqualification/article_7eb7752a-001e-11e7-a85e-d72e71119af9.html
I remember something of campus politics, so I offer the following observations:
1) I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the guy here--McIntosh--is something of an obnoxious jerk.
2) I seriously doubt this really had anything to do with his opponent's sexual preferences and some weird attempt at diversity.
3) What I do think it's about is someone in the admin having it in for McIntosh and using the election commissioner to do his or her dirty work.
Thoughts (if any)?
Anyway, here's the scoop:
An attorney for senior Robert McIntosh, who was disqualified from the race for student body president, filed court papers to investigate whether he was discriminated against "based on the fact that he is a heterosexual, white, Christian male."
Student government officials say junior Bobby Brooks won the election. He is the school's first openly gay president.
McIntosh initially won more votes than Brooks or any other candidate, but he was disqualified for an alleged violation of campaign rules. The student-run election commission said McIntosh failed to submit receipts for glow sticks that he purchased to use in a campaign video posted on Facebook.

In a Houston Chronicle op-ed published Wednesday that caught university officials by surprise, Perry said the administration at Texas A&M University owes students answers about Bobby Brooks' victory, which came after the top vote-getter, Robert McIntosh, was disqualified amid accusations of voter intimidation and failure to report a campaign expense. The A&M student government's Judicial Court later cleared McIntosh of the former charge but upheld the latter, according to the student newspaper, The Battalion.
Perry wrote that the process at best "made a mockery of due process and transparency" and at worst "allowed an election to be stolen outright."
