It was fiber optic cable (stuff I saw being buried next to Interstates decades ago to carry traffic cam images), with the outer sheath made of HDPE, which "hasn't got much flammable in it," many (an unknown number, but passerbys have taken pics) large reels of it stored there for years, but it's all some crackhead's fault who said "I bet I can light this stuff on fire." www.georgiapol.com/2017/04/04/hell-burns-hotter-85-fire/

Good article. The guy makes good points, especially about the GDOT peeps not knowing how much or even exactly what they had in storage. God forbid someone go by there once a month and do a spot check.

If a private company had been responsible for those conditions instead of GDOT, heads would roll. Since it's a government agency, though, the only one in trouble will be the crackhead.

I hope no one was hurt. I'm sure your crackheads comment was very general, and you didn't mean to imply anything about any particular poster, er, person being irresponsible... But amazingly, no one was hurt - the highway was shut down when the smoke was billowing over it, and someone noticed concrete pieces were falling from underneath so all firefighters were ordered out from under the bridge just minutes before it fell.
