SO hard to pick quotes from this National Review opinion piece-- I laughed all the way through. But then, I'm horrible, as we all know. I laugh at funerals. If I were in ancient Rome, I'd be making fun of Nero's fiddle-playing even as my toga caught fire.
Anyway. I got to the last line of this paragraph and knocked over my coffee laughing. It's actually one of the more serious paragraphs in the piece, until the last line, which is (to me) just devastating.
Liberals are still convinced Trump is some kind of autocrat-in-waiting. And he may well be in his heart. But the would-be autocrats who actually become real-life autocrats only achieve success because they are popular and know how to manipulate the system from within — and because they did their homework. That’s not Trump. Yes, he’s violating democratic and political norms, but he’s not doing it according to some master plan like an Erdogan or a Putin, he’s doing it more like a weird hybrid of Mr. Magoo and Chauncey Gardiner.
I will never watch Trump again without seeing a hybrid of Mr. Magoo and Chauncey Gardiner.
