www.theguardian.com/uk-news/live/2017/jun/16/grenfell-tower-fire-london-police-criminal-investigation-into-tragedy-latest-updatesI didn’t see anything about this yet, so here goes my attempt. If you’ve followed the news, you may have seen the great fire in the London tower block called Greenfell. The number of dead is still unknown, but the official count is 30 by now. It is expected to grow. I’ve seen unofficial figures of 150 dead. Most apartment blocks are built to contain fire, but pressures of gentrification caused the owners of this block to put in substandard cladding that’s banned in much of the rest of the EU. The cladding made the fire escape the fire containment and spread throughout the building. By now there’s a furious debate here about how regulations have been relaxed, and how politicians have interferred with code so that the owners wouldn’t have to spend as much on maintenance and safety. There were no sprinklers in the building, and as already mentioned, the cladding put in was inserted sloppily – and mostly to make the building look better. Officials were warned several times, but ignored the warnings. The next time you see a Conservative and right-Libertarian go on about how red tape gets in the way of innovation or development, it would be good to point to Greenfell. What these people mostly want to cut are the expensive bits that keep people alive when there’s a disaster.

"red tape" that saves lives is ok by me.
What a horrifying disaster.
