Okay, so here's something that I never really knew. I have always assumed that "flotsam and jetsam" was a term in and of itself, that separately the words meant nothing or the same thing. However, that turns out not to be the case:
So, if someone accidentally threw out the baby with the bathwater, the baby would be flotsam, while the bath water would be jetsam. What does this have to do with the price of tea in China, or US politics as the case may be? Well...I'm not exactly sure, but it's the first thing that came to mind in reading the following two articles, which mostly concern the current state of the Democratic Party and the major news networks:
From Julian Assange (Dem Party): www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1spvr6n
From Glenn Greenwald (news media): theintercept.com/2017/06/27/cnn-journalists-resign-latest-example-of-media-recklessness-on-the-russia-threat/
In general, I'm not a fan of either one of these guys. And I'm pretty sure I disagree with the conclusions in the first piece, though I agree with the conclusions in the second.
Flotsam and jetsam are terms that describe two types of marine debris associated with vessels. Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam describes debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship's load. The word flotsam derives from the French word floter, to float. Jetsam is a shortened word for jettison.
