So look, I'm semi-addicted to old TV sitcoms. Not Friends, not Seinfeld, not MTM, not even I love Lucy, but rather a handful of sitcoms that are not quite "classic." Chief among these are NewsRadio and Just Shoot Me. The former aired from 1995-1999, the latter aired from 1997-2003. Both were set in New York. Both concerned businesses owned by uber rich businessmen: Jimmie James owned an AM radio station in the former, Jack Gallo owned a Cosmo-esque magazine in the latter. And both shared a common theme in this regard: rich guys trying to keep up and/or outdo other rich guys. The number one "other rich guy" for both sitcoms? Easy enough to guess: Donald Trump. I wash these shows--an episode or two--fairly regularly still, when I have an hour to kill and want to zone out. And it occurred to me that doing so reinforces the idea that Trump-as-President is some sort of punchline to a long-running joke. How in the hell did we get here, again?

Srsly? H. L. Mencken explained it almost 100 years ago. Too bad religion gets in the way of reality for so many people.
