I never liked Hayes that much. You liked his beard. Come on, admit it. I have a better beard. Mine is still alive.

One of the things one could take from my list is that I apparently am more willing to "roll the dice," as it were, and vote for candidates who I knew less about in the moment. Heh. I'm exactly the opposite. Unless what I know is bad, I tend to prefer the candidate I know. I value stability, integrity, and experience highly.* For example, in 2008, I would have gone McCain had he not chosen Palin. Do I think him perfect? No. Does he always vote the way I'd like? No. But I think him a man of integrity and patriotism, who truly is about serving his country over himself. That is actually worth more to me in many ways than a person's politics. Plus he has shown himself capable of stretching a hand across the aisle to work with the other party. Whereas Obama in 2008 was not particularly experienced and I am wary of that. When I was a young'n back in 1992, his youth, glamour, and obvious intelligence likely would have appealed to me as B. Clinton's did. But not in 2008. It's not that I disliked him -- it's that I didn't feel I knew him enough to trust him. I also, in the primaries, preferred Hillary to him for the same reason. (Whereas if I were to choose now, I'd go Obama over Hillary for sure.) Palin killed it for me with regard to McCain -- and again, it was actually less her politics than the fact I thought she was an ignorant dolt. And even assuming she never got to the oval office, I was really disappointed McCain sold out and chose her -- and yes, I do think it was a sell-out, and one he regretted well before the campaign was over. It remains by far my biggest disappointment with him. (I'm over it now. If you haven't gathered, I'm an admirer, and barring the Palin thing, have long been so. His war record alone would have cemented that for me.) Trouble was, I came to dislike Palin so much by election time that I just couldn't go there. (I know he picked her to pacify the far right, who were suspicious of him. But alas, I suspect by doing so, he threw away a lot of voters like me.) But had McCain chosen a smart moderate with impeccable integrity, that's where my vote would have gone in 2008. Trump, of course, was the worst of all worlds for me. No experience, terrible character flaws, history of lying selfishness, and shady business dealings -- there is pretty much no one I wouldn't prefer, taking his politics entirely aside. I didn't at all feel that way about Reagan, GHWB, Romney, W or any republican on your list --I like and/or admire them to at least some degree (some obviously more than others -- W is not the man his dad was IMO, for example). So. Still thinking about this one. Like Vince, I'm not sure my expectations of the candidates at the time they were running are worth much for Carter or Reagan. (Heh. I think my expectations of Carter could be summed up with "Ooh! He has a peanut farm!" ) But for whatever it is worth, I've been mulling this thread topic over since you posted it. *ETA: Heh. In that particular sense, Rob -- my bias towards experience and stability over rolling the dice with regard to political candidates -- I may be more conservative than you are.

1) Kerry 2) Gore 3) B. Clinton 4) Dukakis 5) Obama 6) Reagan 7) H.W. Bush 8) Dole 9) H. Clinton 10) G.W. Bush 11) Carter 12) Romney 13) Mondale 14) McCain 15) Trump
Basically, I think policy wonks would make better presidents than charismatic ideologues. Though I am also influenced by character (I think H. Clinton is a very intelligent policy wonk who should be nowhere near the seat of power, and I remain convinced that GW Bush is and always was a mean, dry drunk).
