The "debate" in the librarian v. Melania thread gave me this idea. People wonder who others supported or would have supported in the face of Trump's success, so here's a chance to lay some cards on the table. Consider the candidates from the two major parties since 1980. No independents, just R's and D's. Allow that voting is mandatory and that you have only two choices in a given election. What would be your order of preference for all of these candidates, i.e. which one would you most want to vote for and which one would you least want to vote for? Also, try to set aside what each did as President (the ones who won) and consider your decision in relation to your expectations when they actually ran.
These are the candidates, in temporal order: Carter, Reagan, Mondale, H.W. Bush, Dukakis, B. Clinton, Dole, Gore, G.W. Bush, Kerry, McCain, Obama, Romney, H. Clinton, Trump
I'll go first (from most preferred to least preferred):
1) Reagan 2) B. Clinton 3) Romney 4) Dukakis 5) Obama 6) Dole 7) G.W. Bush 8) Kerry 9) H.W. Bush 10) Carter 11) H. Clinton 12) Mondale 13) Gore 14) McCain 15) Trump
See? That means I'd vote for Reagan over anyone else on the list, Bill Clinton over everyone else but Reagan, and so on.

One of the things one could take from my list is that I apparently am more willing to "roll the dice," as it were, and vote for candidates who I knew less about in the moment.

What if Reagan was running on a ticket w/ Trump?

That's beyond the parameters here. VPs aren't a consideration. But my personal position is that VPs are mostly inconsequential. I don't consider them at all when I decide who to vote for. After all, they have no real power, aside from a potential tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

Well, I suppose they can be consequential if the president dies. But fair enough, if you want to just stick w/ presidential candidates. I dunno how I would do a ranking, to be honest. Maybe I'll just start with who I would put at the number one slot. Probably Dukakis. Not impressed w/ Reagan; never have been.

I'll have to give it some thought. Trump is most certainly last. I have kind words of some kind for all of the rest on your list. At this point, I rank Trump below Nixon (who at least had the merit of coming across as intelligent and stable).
I care about vice presidential candidates only if I think they'd be a disaster as president. Palin was what sank McCain for me, for example. It was less her politics and more because she came across as painfully ignorant. I just couldn't imagine her in the oval office. And especially given McCain's age, I couldn't risk it.

Well, if VPs are included, it would have to be only the VPs on a given ticket (i.e., Obama is always paired with Biden), otherwise there are too many combos to consider. So Reagan/Trump couldn't be a consideration.

This is hard as I don't remember much about say Carter or Reagan from when I was a kid, and even less about Mondale or Dukakis.

What I want to know is how many slots Grover Cleveland will take.

I never liked Hayes that much. You liked his beard. Come on, admit it. ETA: On a serious note, I'm still thinking about this one. Not an easy question for an over-thinker like me. ETA: The candidate I was most excited about, ever, was Bill Clinton -- by far. That was, however, at least partly a reflection of me being all young and bright-eyed and bouncy with enthusiasm at the time, and he seemed all youngish and cool, for, like, a presidential candidate. I'm waaaaaaay too cynical now to ever feel that way about a candidate again. ETA: Besides my own age/views etc. shaping my views of candidates at the time they ran (teenage me had different standards than I do now), it's very hard to consider them apart from my current assessment of them.
