I was just about to post this under the heading "surprise, surprise."
It was always abundantly fucking obvious to me he'd have to back off on this one. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of criticism for Clinton on the email front. But please.
We can also add this to the "many things Trump ranted about during his campaign and/or Democrats fear he'll do will never happen" file.

Yes, Trump said MANY things during the election that were clearly meant to energize people but that were either not realistic or were things he really didn't mean to ever do, or were misspoken (which he has an unfortunate and worrisome tendency to do). It was obvious the day after the election, by what he said and how he said it (very kind to Clinton), that he wouldn't pursue this.

I think Cass had the title right. This will be a surprise only to a small segment of Trump voters.

Well, it wouldn't have been jailing her, as much as it would have been assigning a special prosecutor who would or at least could empanel a grand jury. It's not a surprise, nor should it be. It is smart. And most of his supporters will accept that. A few of the extreme nuts might be surprised, as I guess would be some on the left like Jesse Jackson who asked for a preemptive pardon. thehill.com/homenews/administration/306517-jesse-jackson-to-obama-pardon-clintonDoes anyone know if the FBI is still investigating the Clinton Foundation?

You have to pick your battles.

It's not about being smart. It's about the pure hell which would be unleashed in the media, in Congress, and in the streets if President Pussygrabber were to prosecute Hillary Clinton. That strikes me as basically the same thing as being smart.

Maybe I'm not following you.
Trump is apparently not going to go after Clinton. That's smart, imo. It's not in yours?
Going after Clinton would do exactly what you say, I think. And I don't think that would be smart at all.
So, there are two options: the smart one and the not smart one. Trump is apparently--and maybe surprisingly to some--opting for the former.

I'm not gonna quote cause it just takes up too much room, but let me phrase it another away. It would be politically dumb to go after Clinton. So he's doing the non dumb thing. Shocking as that is.
And, yes, if he had decided to go after Clinton, Trump would assign the special Prosecutor, but it would still be up to the prosecutor and the GJ and probably the justice department to indict, and then a jury to convict, so he can't just jail her.
But he recognized what an amazing mess it would be, so he did the non dumb thing.
Maybe that's the best we can hope from Trump. Non Dumb.
