I'm guessing fetuses will now be "babies."
What on earth are they going to substitute for "transgender"?

There is other ridiculous stuff discussed in the article, too. Like this:
Maybe it's a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back thing, but I'm really, really upset about this.
At best, it's petty and stupid, but I think its effects on vulnerable (there's that forbidden word!) populations like LBGT people and the effect on scientific stuff generally (WTF on the substitutes for science-based and evidence-based).
I really do think there is a concerted effort being made to drag us right into the Handmaid's Tale before 2018. The hits on higher education in the tax bill, the yuuge tax breaks to the wealthy and cuts to stuff helping the working and middle classes that will increase the gap between rich and poor...
In my whole life, I've never felt genuinely scared about where our country is going, but I am now.
whatever this is that's happening now? It's not "conservatism." It's reactionary, incompetent, mean-spirited bullshit.

Remember when Minitrue was instituted, and some people actually argued it was dangerous, because if the wrong people got control of it, they would promote dangerous lies, instead of valuable ones?
On the positive side, people will have no trouble with these mental contortions, since they already know that War is Peace, Slavery is Freedom, and Ignorance is Strength.
We are at peace. We are a free people. We are the strongest nation on the planet.
Calm down, Winston.

"Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it," George Orwell, "1984."

I thought these people didn't like Political Correctness. And here they go and develop their own alt-right version of it.

Yep, this'll sure showed them bossy libtards who are always trying to tell real 'Muricanz what words they shouldn't use. Freedom! MAGA!
Can anyone come up with a word they can substitute for "transgender" that transgender people don't find offensive?
Also -- seriously stop and think about what their new substitute for science-based does. " in consideration with community standards and wishes.". So, if the science doesn't make the right people happy, we'll just edit it up a bit until it does. MAGA!
Seriously, I'm not sure our country is going to come back from this. This is how empires corrupt from within and die.

I'm thinking it will have to be a sentence rather than a word currently in use. That will make it a lot harder to write something that needs to frequently use the term "transgender."
They could do what we lawyer folks do: define a new term and then use it. E.g, I just wrote an agreement that concerned some science-y intellectual property. It was necessary to be quite precise about what we were talking about, but then we needed a shortcut term to refer to it throughout the document. What you do is define the term precisely up front, with your shortcut in quotes and parentheses afterward, and the use the shortcut (with initial caps to make it clear you mean the defined term) thereafter.
Of course, then they will likely outlaw the new term before there's time for people to become familiar with it, so there's that.
I have a couple of scientist friends. They are beside themselves about this.

"in consideration with community standards and wishes" gives me chills. Same here, Don. ETA: The Trump administration is all about acknowledging "reality" when it comes to the issue Jerusalem, consequences be damned. But when it comes to science and evidence, we need to consider "community standards and wishes", lest the truth hurt dainty snowflakes. They complain that citizen on the left are always demanding they be PC and use or avoid certain words. And here they are using government power to enforce use and avoidance of certain words -- and in every, it's designed to further far right-wing ideology. Beyond hypocritical and incredibly dangerous. Doubly scary in light of their attacks on the free press.

This is one of those "news reports" that struck me immediately as the kind to be very skeptical about. Fake news, if you will. And of course, so many people are jumping on the end-of-the-world-according-to-Trump bandwagon. But really, what would the Trump admin get out of doing something like this? It doesn't make sense to me. This NPR story says Trump officals at HHS are pushing back against this: www.npr.org/2017/12/16/571329234/trump-administration-reportedly-instructs-cdc-on-its-own-version-of-7-dirty-wordNPR also brings up a possible angle that makes more sense: As I said, I'm very skeptical this is what people are saying it is.
