I hope they are made an example of. Even if they don't get 45 (which they likely won't, if convicted), I hope whatever the verdict is (it damn well better be guilty) that the punishment is severe enough to send a message to the other antifa and antifa-like jackasses out there.

In a perfect world, the Dem party would split into the real liberals and the lunatic far-leftist progressives. This would partition off the crazy from the rest of the party so that the adults can talk without the diaper-shitting brats interrupting.
Same could happen for the Repubs too if the real/sane conservatives could break away from the bootlicking Trump lapdogs.
We really, really need more than two viable national parties. The two big ones no longer represent the ideals of the voters; not even their own voters.
Works up here in Canada, as we have the Liberals (Canadian equivalent of the Dems but slightly further left), the NDP (New Democratic Party, which are basically the far-left loons), the Conservatives/Torries (Republicans), and the People's Party of Canada (PPC, the far-right loons).
There are other parties, of course, like Bloc Quebecois and Green Party, but they don't really fall into the traditional left/right distinction of the US parties.

Taibbi's really been on fire the past two months. Not that he's not usually good, he is, but he's had 3 or 4 stories in a row now that have been really exceptional.

I like that they didn't bend the knee and I hope they stick to that and don't bend to any pressure from these mouth-breathing morons. On a related note, some delusional idiots on Twitter (of course) are trying to call George RR Martin an "istaphobe" (i.e., racist, transphobic, etc., all the usual bullshit slurs) because he mispronounced someone's name at the Hugo Awards, and that person happened to be a "person of color TM," so obviously that means Martin is a klan member. And, then he mentioned some "cishet white male authors" at the same event, so he's obviously also a huge transphone the likes of which the world has not seen since JK Rowling (that's a joke). Haven't seen the story on bigger, arguably more "respectable" outlets yet, but of course it's on woke trash site The Daily Dot: www.dailydot.com/unclick/george-rr-martin-hugo-awards/

Haha, yeah I read through that guy's thread last night when I saw James Lindsay post about it.
Dude claims he's a grad student in stats but, my god, does he not understand basic math theory at all. This is Olympic gold medal level mental gymnastics on display here.

Haha, I'd forgotten about that ad. And what's up with the extreme head shake on the word "United?"

Yeah, possibly. As much of a douchebag as Matt Gaetz is, he at least did a good job of exposing Zuckerberg as being either an outright liar or misleadingly incompetent.

This is a sad story, of course, but also a lesson in not being an idiot. Whatever your politics are, the attitude of the overwhelming majority of Republican politicians (and voters) has been undeniably stupid and denialist. Claims by Republicans ranging from "it's not a big deal" all the way to "it's a hoax" are nothing more than conspiracy theory bullshit. Couple that with that "I ain't wearing a mask because muh freedumb..and something something fascism and socialism!" and you get monumental stupidity that is legitimately deadly. The latest example is Herman Cain, who proudly regurgitated all of these bullshit denialist talking points and bragged about going to Trump's rally in late June while not wearing a mask. He is diagnosed with COVID-19 nine nine nine days later, and is now dead. I don't mean to sound harsh, because this is a sad development, but he's dead very likely due to his own stupidity and the stupidity of every person who has engaged in this conspiracy theory denialism. Wear a fucking mask. www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/former-gop-presidential-candidate-herman-cain-dead-coronavirus-n1235312

Yeah, incredibly stupid. Granted, sorry to say that English degrees aren't really worth much these days anyway and have very limited market value in terms of jobs and pay. So, if English and humanities degrees weren't already turning people off because they're practically worthless, then this just seems like another nail in the coffin. On a related note, this type of BS seems to be spreading to other schools like University of Chicago who have, at least in the past, touted the sacred values of upholding freedom of speech and have usually staved off (at least publicly) the influence of political ideologies. This from Jerry Coyne: whyevolutionistrue.com/2020/07/23/the-university-of-chicago-contravenes-its-own-principle-of-political-and-ideological-neutrality/

That's an interesting question. The people who have to blatantly troll for likes/clicks seem to already have some significant self-esteem issues driving their attention-whoring behaviour. There are already examples of very popular YouTubers who have openly talked about the large mental health toll that doing that kind of work inflicts on them. For the troll posters, I would think that they wouldn't cope with a sudden loss of attention very well at all. Might be likely to engage in increasingly desperate attention-seeking behaviour, like someone flailing their arms and gasping for air while drowning.

Was totally unsuprising when Facebook and Amazon admitted that they basically steal ideas from competitors. Amazon's way of going about it seems especially egregious, in that it seems that they will meet with start-ups regarding possible partnerships, then decline the team-up, but then go and develop their own version of whatever technology or product they saw in the meeting. I would think that all parties would've had to have signed documents protecting the intellectual property rights but I guess either that doesn't happen or Amazon is so big and rich they just don't give a crap.

Likely because focusing on it runs counter to pushing the "false narrative du jour" that everything connected to or spawning from the protests and the entire movement is noble, peaceful, and "on the right side of history."
