It also highlights the fact that, far too often, news media outlets are much more concerned with being first than with being right. Absolutely. And I think this is much more true than it used to be. We're now used to insta-news on the internet, not waiting for the next day's newpaper or the 6 o'clock newscast. News outlets are now that much more eager to get the story out NOW, not an hour from now. Then too, reliable, good news sources are not bringing in the income they used to, given how easy it is to get news (or "news") for free on the internet. They've had to cut staff. Which means fewer people checking stories for accuracy and making sure sources are reliable. All we can do (besides perhaps paying for a source of good news somewhere to help support good journalism) is be just a tad skeptical with stories from slanted sources, that play into one side's narrative just a bit too neatly, and that rely on third-hand sources when a confirmed quote from a source would be obtainable. (That said, sometimes there is good reason to rely on anonymous sources. That standing alone doesn't mean the story isn't true.)

Heh. Here's a piece of outlandish news relating to the #TakeAKnee movement that in fact DOES check out. You may have heard that Vice President Pence walked out of a Colts game today because some players knelt. I've read from sources on Twitter this was in fact a planned stunt on his part -- that he flew into town solely to do this stunt (going from Las Vegas to Indianapolis to Los Angeles just to do it), that he had a plane to catch to a big fundraising event and never planned to stay whatever the players did, and that in fact he wasted a bundle of taxpayer dollars and secret service resources in order to pull the stunt. BUT I'm still checking that part out -- will add a cite to my post if that turns out to be true, and meanwhile will give him the benefit of the doubt. Kind of. But THIS does in fact check out, and is rather amusing. VP Mike Pence tweets same picture from Colts game that he tweeted in 2014I checked his Twitter feeds directly, and this is true. He tweeted today a picture from a game years ago with a caption indicating it was taken today, I submit to give the impression he and his wife were having an awesome time at this Colts game until those terrible unpatriotic players went and spoiled it all by kneeling. (Because why else do it?) Surely he could foresee that the players would kneel -- this could not have been a surprise to him. Certainly it is a stunt -- my only question is whether he really had a plane to catch, which should be easily verifiable.

ETA: And of course, this further fuels the partisan divide and the increasing tendency of many to believe one cannot trust ANYTHING. Stupidest. Culture war. Ever. And the many would not be wrong. The Trumps of the world are here to stay.

The Trumps of the world are here to stay. Eh, I don't know about the first part. I think that people who don't trust anything/anyone are just as foolish as those who trust everything/everyone. And I don't doubt that awful people are here to stay. I'd just prefer they not stay in the White House.

The Pence walk-out from the 49ers/Colts game was a staged stunt and there was nothing spontaneous about it. There you have it. Trump and Pence wanted to fan the dying flames of racial resentment a little higher so they put their little heads together and came up with a staged protest. As if they give a shit about "disrespecting the country" when every day they push for and advocate policies that disrespect Americans who are citizens of the country. The dishonesty of Trump and Pence is bad enough, but the degree to which they will exploit a situation to inflame the base and whip up phony indignation against the NFL's Black players is depraved and dangerous. Maybe when someone decides to emulate Stephen Paddock and open up on the players during a game, Trump and Pence will be held accoutable for their sick, sick games. Some will say they had it coming. And you and I paid for it. The Jason LaCanfora story is meaningless trash from an NFL "insider" who conflated and distorted his interview with Colin Kaepernick. The key revelation from LaCanfora is Kaepernick does indeed still want to play in the NFL, but it doesn't change anything with the blackballing. The trick Pence pulled is FAR more serious and disgusting. And as taxpayers we're picking up the tab for this bullshit.

Pence is roughly a thousand times worse than Trump, imo. Trump is a narcissistic blowhard. Pence is a poisonous snake. His agenda is terrifying. He's the Christian version of Sharia Law. Trump is vacuous. Pence is evil incarnate.

Possibly the dumbest analogy I have ever seen: Why taking the knee stomps on my footNo one is stomping on anyone else's foot by taking a knee (or sitting, or doing something else) during the Anthem at a football game. I'm still not impressed by the protests, but that's just me. The players doing this aren't damaging anyone (apart from their own careers, potentially) and--again--there's no real reason to play the Anthem before a game. It's not an actual event of state.

Jerry Jones ups the ante and declares any Dallas Cowboys player who "disrespects" the national anthem won't play. Apparently, Jones believes, as several other owners do, that "his" players do not have the right to engage in peaceful protest and if they do, they won't play for him. This heavy-handful, and probably nonenforceable declaration will go down real well in locker rooms across the league. Jerry's sons of bitches will do what he tells them to do. Awaiting the predictable Trump tweet applauding Jerrah for treating his boys like boys.

He kneeled, now he's saying anyone who kneels will get benched?
Sounds like he got a phone call from The Donald. Wonder what was offered/threatened?
