I've been following what's going on in the EU territories in Carribean, and this storm scares me, so please don't take any chances, and be smart.
Sint Marteen and St Martin have been flattened, and Barbuda appears to be completely gone.

Yes, I have friends in Saint Martin. I was actually there for clean-up after Luis in 1995, which was really, really bad. This is much worse.
As to Irma, the damn thing isn't making sense. Right now, the safest place to be in South Florida may very well be the lower Keys. The worst place to be looks like--to me--Miami Beach, Miami Shores, and Hollywood.

So, now the track has shifted a little to the west, meaning it may impact the Keys directly and could end up in the Gulf and even hit New Orleans. It's also moved s little closer to Cuba, which is bad for Cuba to be sure, but might also weaken the system.

Wherever it hits, it is going to be a mess.

What's your plan, Rob?
I can't believe what you all are going through. I'm so sorry. The weather over here (southern California) is always so bland, but I suppose having the great quake will be no picnic. And we'd have no warning, either.
I have a friend whose daughter lives in Florida. Both she and her fiance have insulin dependent diabetes, and the worry (one of the worries) is how to keep their insulin refrigerated if they lose power.
Please be safe!

Oh, I'm good. I have options. My house is well-battened down, has hurricane-proof windows and has been through some tough tests, including Andrew. I'll probably stay with the ex and the kids at her apartment, though, as it's built like Fort Knox and has easy access to vital services and major roads, plus is on one of FP&L's main grids, so will likely not be without power for more than a day (if that).

I've said this before, Rob -- it is a wonderful thing, for your kids and for yourselves, that you have such a good relationship with your ex.
Stay safe and please post in regularly. We non-Florida folks will be worrying about you Florida folks.

I second what Cass said!

Yeah, what Cass said. Everyone here has all these different political opinions and sometimes we even argue about them, but at a time like this I feel like it's time to set that aside and just worry about Carribeans, Floridians, and I suppose Georgians later if the storm keeps its strength as it moves up the spine of Florida.

Excuse the language but.... Fuck...!
This is from your National Weather Service. They don't usually use this kind of language.

I'll echo cass too. This is nothing but bad news. Be careful. The forecast keeps moving west, but not fast enough for me.

This link may help with the insulin issue. www.diabetesincontrol.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Stability-of-insulin-chart-1-2016.pdfOur dog uses Novolin N, which has a six-week shelf life at room temp. Most vials have at least four weeks. The pens may be trickier.

Tips for traffic news on I-75 birth from Bradenton/ST Pete? Asking for a friend's parents who have prepared to stay but see things getting worse..
Looks like the storm is moving more their way. I'm trying to help sort out what to do, but I'm on the other side of the planet.

This link says I-75 traffic is heavy but moving: www.orlandosentinel.com/weather/hurricane/os-hurricane-irma-i-75-i-95-traffic-0908-story.htmlFor me it seems a bit late to head north. It would be, at the very least, a long, long journey. And then traffic jams, running out of gas, etc., with a storm at your back... that's a bit terrifying. I personally would stay put, as long as I was in a structurally sound building outside of the storm surge evacuation area. Buuut that's just me.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - there's no winning answer, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in traffic when it hit. I think they're just constantly reassessing, and I predict they'll stay, either in their house (they've been preparing for days) or with friends with fewer windows.
For me, it's wait and hope time - and positive messages.
Thanks for the link! I found navbug, and that has good info - I'm a bit mystified about I-95 looking clearer, at least up to Savannah.
