and several injured. Still breaking news. www.yahoo.com/gma/york-city-officers-responding-reports-shots-fired-lower-194603578--abc-news-topstories.htmlTo note, I often run and bike on this path. And as it happens, yesterday at about the time this occurred, I was right on that exact intersection, heading back from a meeting in that 'hood. ETA: I've updated this twice so far to up the death toll. Christ. If I'd chosen today for my meeting instead of yesterday, I could easily have been in this intersection. I'm really worried someone I know might have been there. Also, FYI, there is a school right near there. I haven't yet seen info with the dead and injured.

Jesus Christ, will it never end. I'm so sick and tired of all the death and hate. I'm so happy your OK Cass and I'm praying there were no children hit, but nobody should have been.

8 people dead, 11 seriously or critically injured, including 2 children.
All over twitter, alt-righters are screaming that this demonstrates why we need Trumps's travel ban (never mind that this killer wasn't from any of the countries covered by the ban).
You know where you won't hear any of that shit? Right here in NYC.
Everyone is grieving for the victims and their families, of course. We are relieved the perpetrator is in custody.
But I was out tonight giving giving candy to trick-or-treaters, who were out in full force. The Halloween parade went forward. The marathon will go forward on Sunday. Even tonight, people were not cowering at home, or anything like it.
Get as hysterical as you like out there, you alt-right people a thousand miles away. New York City doesn't roll that way. Take your travel ban and your extreme vetting and put them wherever Trump scrounged up that toupee of his.
And ISIS? If we got through 9/11, you can't think you'll bring us down even a notch. Fugeddaboudit.
And don't anyone think I'll be avoiding that path. I'll make a point of running there this weekend. (Especially since the marathon will take over Central Park on Sunday.)
ETA:
I am not really sure what this says about me or about NYers. But it never once occurred to me not to go out tonight as I'd planned, and from the look of the streets, that was generally the feeling. I wasn't feeling fearful, and it sure didn't look like others were.
Maybe it's a post 9/11 thing -- after that, an attack like this just is never gonna send us into freak-out mode. We will prevail -- it is our city's middle finger to terrorists.

The guy jumped out of the truck with a paintball gun and a pellet gun, right? This reeks of suicide-by-cop, imo.

As usual, some people can't help but latch on to any tragedy that promotes their own agenda, facts be damned. Same with there's a shooting and people call instantly for new gun laws which often wouldn't have done anything to prevent what happened.
And this, while horrible, didn't come off anywhere near the scale of 9-11. There was no reason to really think there would be a 2nd attack.
Besides, NY'ers are tough. I may not live downstate anymore, but this wouldn't put me off either.

Same with there's a shooting and people call instantly for new gun laws which often wouldn't have done anything to prevent what happened. I notice you aren't criticizing President Pussygrabber for instantly demanding an end to the immigration policies which allowed Sayfullo Saipov to enter the country. I also notice you aren't criticizing President Pussygrabber for trashing America's laws, due process, and screwing up the prosecution case against Saipov by demanding he be given the death penalty. Some people can't help but latch on to any tragedy that promotes their own agenda. Some people can't help but to give those people a pass. Incidentally, Trump took time to froth at the mouth to blame NY Senator Chuck Schumer for the immigration policy, but he hasn't called NY Governor Cuomo or Mayor DiBlasio to offer support, sympathy or assistance. That would indicate Trump gave a shit about anything but politicizing this tragedy in a way he didn't with the Las Vegas massacre. You don't say? There's no other trucks tooling around NYC where some asshole could make a a quick right turn and wipe out a bunch of tourists or kids waiting for a school bus? The New York Marathon is this weekend and thousands will be participating as well as watching. There's no reason to really think there would be a 2nd or 3rd or 4th or 5th attack by a terror cell? Because what happened the day before we arrived wasn't on the scale of 9-11 is a reason to relax, chill and blow it off? Somebody tell my wife because she was really shook up over the attack on the bike trail. Hell, somebody tell the NYPD because they are out in force and for every cop I can see, I'm willing to bet there's a lot more I can't. Terrorists gonna terror. They may never wreak havoc on the city the way they did 16 years ago, but it's probably not due to a lack of plotting to repeat and top 9/11.

Well, I'm living here, as I have since before 9/11, and in fact have using that very bike path this week. I am not any more worried about another attack than I usually am on any given day, nor was I on Halloween night. Our Halloween parade happened, as spectacular as always. Our marathon will happen on Sunday.
Fuck the terrorists.
Those who live here are very aware that shit like this is going to happen from time to time -- we are the ideal terrorist target in any number of ways and that's the world we live in. We either accept that, or we move somewhere where it's less likely. New Yorkers don't have time to cower and freak out.
Not sure why you're going after Vince when he's more or less echoing what I said. And, you know, I'm the one who lives here 365/365.
I dunno, maybe 9/11 hardened us a bit in NYC. I don't know anyone freaking out over "Omg, what if there's another attack." There will be, absolutely. We know that. We just don't know when.
From my observation, it seems non-New Yorkers are way more freaked out about it all than New Yorkers.
One thing we ARE worked up about -- (by we, I mean everyone I know, and likely pretty much most of us in NYC, I think it's safe to say) very much resent Trump and his minions using this event in our city to rally for policies nearly all of us oppose. They spend all their time sneering at us as out-of-touch coastal elites who just don't get the terrorist thing, to which we say "oh really? Who the fuck gets it better than we do?" They don't give a shit about us, and they can keep their "fixes" for terrorism. It's my belief Trump's policies and words encourage home-grown internet-recruited terrorists, making us even less safe.
Fuck Trump. Fuck the alt-right

I was not aware you were the official spokeswoman for eight million New Yorkers though I said nothing about cowering or freaking out. So you've said more than once, but I reject the characterization. I'm not "going after" Vince. I'm responding to his remarks, which is what I was under the impression we are supposed to be doing here no matter who he's echoing. Well, from my observation, it seems non-New Yorkers have a damn good reason to be "freaked out" about some prick weaponizing a truck, plowing through bike riders and joggers and injuring kids after t-boning a school bus . In 2016, some 60 million visitors to NYC pumped $43 billion bucks into the city's cash registers, so you can sneer at the non-New Yorkers for being "freaked out" but let what happened this week happen again and again and again, and it won't be long before those freaked-out wussies take their trips and bucks somewhere else that isn't a magnet for deranged fucktards like Sayfullo Saipov. Six of the eight killed Tuesday were "non-New Yorkers" from Argentina and Belgium. Did they have time to "cower and freak out" before Saipov rolled over and crushed them?

I didn't call out any one person at all, so why would I single out Trump. I don't disagree that he's using this to grandstand and make himself look good. (Or at least try to.) Not sure why you're implying I should have called him out or what it means that I didn't. I'm not saying it couldn't have happened, but the general feeling I got was this was a lone person, and not a coordinated attack. Where do I say blow it off? Of course police are going to show extra caution. But there was nothing pointing to a large, group attack. And there wasn't one. However, I suppose I should thank you. I saw something the other day, and you just gave me the perfect place to share it. www.gq.com/story/trump-calls-for-death-penaltyArticle talks about how Trump tweeted about this, makes a decent case, but the headline of the article was changed. Why? People love to use things to support their own political agenda. Trump clearly isn't above that sort of thing. (In truth, I doubt he's above much.) But he's also not exclusive in not being able to see beyond his politics.

Seems to me you spend a whole lot of time here informing the rest of us how Black people feel. I am equally qualified to speak as a New Yorker.
