OMG. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Joe Scarsborough (of Morning Joe) retweeted the story, noting that Germany was one of our most valued allies and trade partners. A Trump supporter tweeted back: yeah. A few things have happened since 1945... Oh my God, when I first read your post, I thought you'd said TRUMP tweeted that back. And my stomach seriously turned upside down. *mops brow*

I'm going to tweet Trump some post-1945 historical developments, just in case he needs them.

They have elected officials too, no? Sure, but that's not inconsistent with a constitutional monarchy. It's not even inconsistent with an absolute monarchy, either. So.... are we against monarchies or not? On principle, I mean.

Well, as far as my personal view goes, I prefer not to have monarchies. It's hardly the most crucial characteristic, though, as far as international relations are concerned. Obviously the US has warm relations with a number of monarchies (like the UK, Spain, Holland, etc.), much more so than many republics (like, say, Iran, for example).

That's pretty much how I see it as well.
Monarchs are so permanent. But a lot of them seem very decent.
Whereas, lately, here in the good ol' Republic, it feels kind of oppressive that we have wait four whole years to be rid of an elected leader.

I'd better keep it simple. Trump has a short attention span.
1945: FAILING Nazis and Japanese surrender to allies. Americans are WINNERS!
1945: Cold war between U.S.A and Soviet Union (Russia) begins. Sad!
1946 LOSER Stalin (Leader of Soviet Union/Russia) says communism and capitalism incompatible. Very, very hostile!
1961: Soviets (Russia) build yuuuge wall in Berlin. A very bad wall, believe me.
...
On second thought, forget it. As soon as I get to the Berlin Wall, Trump will conclude the Soviets were awesome and the Germans were losers, and he won't listen to anything else.

I must say I liked when Trump called the UK bomber(s)/terrorists "losers."
Classic Trump. Occasionally useful.

Someone on Twitter suggested that Trump may have been fuming because Obama spoke in Germany today, drawing a yuuuge adoring crowd.
Obama accepted the invitation long before the election, so he wasn't timing it to upstage Trump. Still. I'll bet Trump was pissed. Whether that factored into his behavior...well, who knows, but I don't rule it out.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. In theory, the sovereign is allowing the prime minister and other officials to use her royal authority. She could, I think, legally remove a number of them from office, including the prime minister. Could the Queen dissolve Parliament? That would be an interesting test, but I don't think she could.

Monarchs can be decent when all they have to do is enjoy their hereditary wealth and appear at photo ops. I think they aren't quite as cuddly when they actually have the power to start wars or order you killed. Seriously, one of the founding principles of our country is "No kings." That doesn't mean we have the goal of abolishing monarchies around the world, but at the very least, yes, I think it means our President should not bow to any royalty, ever. I get that you think it doesn't mean anything and it's not important. It's important to me, and a lot of other people.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. What next? The republic of France is a republic?

Well, we're a federated representative republic with oligarchic tendencies.

Well, we're a federated representative republic with oligarchic tendencies. We should put that on our money, just to avoid any misunderstandings.
